World Environment Day: What’s New?
World Environment Day 2026: Climate Crisis, Deforestation & The Urgent Call for Action
Introduction

For many days, perhaps when people were not able to come out of their houses due to the scorching heat of 50 degrees in Delhi, I was very worried as to why it had suddenly become so hot, why the temperature had suddenly increased so much; there must be many reasons behind this, which would be interconnected.
Heat Wave Guidance – IMD – India Meteorological Department
I am from India, and for the last ten to fifteen years, I have been closely observing how the ecosystem is being harmed by ignoring all the norms and advice of environmentalists.
There was a time when the Chipko movement started in India.
The Chipko Movement – Right Livelihood
Khejadi trees were priceless to the people of Rajasthan and surrounding areas; women not only used to worship Peepal and Banyan trees, but they could even imagine harming them.
How Worship of Peepal Tree can Benefit Us ? – YouTube
Today is the day, after just getting a monetary penalty of Rs. 1000 per tree, you can cut any tree, in the name of development.
Back in 2010, when I was living in Vizag, a very picturesque city with enchanting beaches on one side and small hills on the other side, I was totally mesmerised by the city itself.
And this is where the events took a turn.
Fire broke out in the small hills of Visakhapatnam, especially in its rural areas.
Soon, areas that should have been preserved as natural habitats were transformed, and within two years of the fire in the hills, several buildings had been built.
I know that to accommodate the rising population, the government has to step in, but I know little that a chosen government can give a free hand to land sharks for this purpose.
This is disastrous for the environment and ecosystem, as land mafias never think twice before destroying natural habitats.
They float the rules, ignore the importance of the bio-network, and risk destroying an ecosystem by setting fires in the woods.
Let’s not forget the dramatic moment when “Controversies surrounding deforestation policies and rising Amazon fires during Brazil’s political and industrial expansion…”
This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the critical battle for environmental preservation.
This has not happened only in Brazil, but it is happening in every developing and underdeveloped nation.
The sad thing is that the local governments are indirectly supporting the land mafia.
Non-renewable Energy Resources: At Alarmingly Low Levels
As global reserves of non-renewable energy sources like coal, oil, and natural gas have reached critically low levels, it has become increasingly vital to manage our natural resources with care and responsibility.
Unfortunately, rather than adopting sustainable practices and conservation efforts, we are recklessly depleting these invaluable resources, further jeopardizing our energy future and the environment.
We must recognize the urgency of this situation and take immediate action to preserve what remains for future generations.
The modern world and alternative sources of energy
A look at the last 20 years, i.e., the mid-2000s (2005-2006), reveals how fragmented the energy sector has become.
In 2005, fossil fuels made up about 81% of the world’s total primary energy supply. Today, despite trillions of dollars poured into the green transition, fossil fuels still account for around 80%.
It is so easy to compile data and use it to formulate some guidelines, but powerful countries often ignore them.
Twenty years ago, the search for alternative energy sources was popular, and the world was deeply concerned about the excessive use of fossil fuels.
Solar and wind energy offered significant relief to the world.
However, this remains a distant hope for those who prioritize the Earth and its ecosystem over the economy.
This idea seems logical at first, but it marks the beginning of a troubling trend where we destroy our own environment in the name of development.
Entire forests are being cleared to make way for industries and housing.
This is a serious issue.
In reality, industrialists often hope to discover fossil fuels within these forests. Even if they don’t find any, they are still eager to acquire the land for other purposes.
Nowadays, industrialists are acting more like brokers, but they fail to recognize that their harmful actions are jeopardizing the entire planet.
Ultimately, everyone will suffer the consequences of the reckless destruction of natural habitats.
So many guidelines, rules, and regulations: yet the Earth is in danger
Generation after generation, everything on Earth evolved.
But as legitimate citizens of this planet, humans failed at everything, even those things that humans themselves explicitly stated were for the good of the Earth.
Writing rules to save the earth is one thing; being the reason for the earth’s threat is for real… humans failed to save the earth, and are still doing all the worst things to catalyse irreparable destruction.
- War is the biggest threat to the earth, yet big countries continue it for their own selfish interests.
- Development is fine, but from what perspective can the unjust exploitation of the earth for this purpose be justified?
- Although we are reaching new technological heights, we are also contributing significantly to the destruction of the Earth’s priceless heritage.
- The depletion of fossil fuels was anticipated two decades ago, but alternative energy sources are insufficiently developed and widespread. While we face this critical challenge, some oil-producing nations are enjoying their monopoly. It’s time to prioritise sustainable solutions to secure a peaceful and energy-efficient future.
- Our forests are the biggest protective shield of our earth, but land grabbers are trying to destroy them too, without thinking that by damaging the forests, these people are setting the entire earth on fire.
- The discovery of plastic was once considered revolutionary, but today, plastic is the biggest threat to the world, and world leaders are too busy to pay attention to this issue.
- The most important needs of society are clean air, clean water, and food. Nowadays, it has become difficult to get clean water. Due to continuous deforestation, the air has also become polluted, and there is so much monopoly in food that grains are not reaching the needy people.
- Vehicles are essential in today’s world, but the demand for fossil fuel-powered vehicles far exceeds that for electric vehicles. This is largely because traditional vehicles are often seen as more efficient and comfortable to drive. This reliance on non-renewable energy sources poses a significant problem for nature conservation.
- After illegal mining, people are dumping industrial waste into nearby water sources. Major countries are dumping their non-biodegradable waste in underdeveloped countries. Isn’t this harmful to the planet?
- Corruption has become so widespread that individuals are willing to pay large sums of money to carry out even a single unethical act. Consequently, the structures they build often fail within just a few years. This creates a continuous cycle: corruption leads to poor construction, which results in destruction, and then this cycle repeats—new corruption, more construction, more destruction, and so on. No one informs us about the extensive damage this cycle ultimately inflicts on the earth and the environment.
