By civic sense, we refer to behaviours—such as littering, spitting, disregarding traffic rules, vandalism, filming social media reels in public spaces, jumping queues, disrespecting public property, honking unnecessarily, causing a nuisance, and similar actions—that make others feel uncomfortable.
There is no universally accepted ranking of countries based on ‘civic sense’; however, rapid urbanisation, poor adherence to rules, inadequate infrastructure, and large populations in some developing countries pose challenges to maintaining civic awareness in public spaces.
Poor civic conduct is tantamount to anti-social behavior, and it is not merely about adhering to rules.
It is about understanding that even a small act of civic responsibility can have a significant impact on the surrounding environment, helping to create communities that are cleaner, safer, and more compassionate.
A society with strong civic values tends to be more peaceful, harmonious and inclusive.
Civic sense is the collective responsibility that people in a society fulfil towards one another, while also being mindful of the rights, needs, and well-being of society.
Why Civic Responsibility Matters in Modern Society
Yesterday, while I was walking along the road, a vehicle approaching from behind honked so loudly that I narrowly avoided falling onto a nearby pile of garbage. Now, you tell me—what is a heap of trash doing on the road? But then again, it is just waste from the nearby shops; they have dumped it on the street for their own convenience.
As for the common people—well, they have to make do somehow.

We often stray from development. In due course, we forget our roots. This leads to disdain for reality, which in turn is a disaster for society.
- Social Media and Civic Disengagement: Unlike the pre-social media days of a few years ago, we now fall prey to misinformation, fake news, and prank videos on social media. Negative videos garner more views than positive ones, and people often neglect to promote constructive content. This deals a severe blow to civic awareness among citizens. We must be aware of the negative impact of social media platforms.
- Inequality in access to education: The education sector is being affected by rapidly rising inflation. This is harming the next generation. In the pursuit of an inclusive and equitable society, depriving children of formal education could be the worst possible outcome for any system.

In this era of technology, it is essential to enhance civic awareness and general norms of conduct, keeping the digital world in mind.
With approximately 74% of the population expected to use the internet by 2025, we cannot overlook the need to be mindful of our digital behaviour.

- Since vast amounts of information become available to us at the touch of a button, we should respect intellectual property online.
Practical Ways to Promote Civic Sense in Everyday Life
- Examples should be set in a way that people feel compelled to follow them. When more and more people behave rationally and responsibly in public places, it is natural for rule-breakers to feel shame; consequently, even if reluctantly, they too will begin to follow the rules. If this starts to happen, our surroundings will automatically begin to look better, and society will appear to be moving in the right direction.
- Role of Non-Governmental Organizations: Non-governmental organizations bridge the practical gap between citizens and the government and help foster civic awareness among the people. They provide interactive civic education through various community campaigns and facilitate volunteering for civic education.
- Grassroots movements and their effectiveness in civic awareness programs: Grassroots movements are initiatives launched by citizens themselves, involving the organisation of social programs to raise public awareness about the need for a better understanding of civic responsibilities.
