Movie Review: The Devil Wears Prada 2

The Devil Wears Prada 2

Introduction

In my childhood, I was not a movie buff, but I used to read a lot of books and magazines, especially movie magazines.

Gossip’s corner and titbits of actors’ lives kept me excited, though at that time we didn’t even have a Television set in my home.

Here is what the Almighty gave me- A movie-buff life partner and an equally movie-loving daughter.

My husband introduced me to a wide variety of films, especially those starring Amitabh Bachchan. My daughter introduced me to the world of Hollywood films.

Actually, I started watching Hollywood movies with my daughter much later. The Devil Wears Prada, released in 2006, was one of those Hollywood films that got me started.

For Meryl Streep & Anne Hathaway only

I don’t like movies that keep hyping an imaginary situation, where women are overdressed, and villains and vamps have a field day until some protagonist emerges as the winner.

So, I started watching Hollywood movies and even regional movies, where I can feel the story, I can imagine the next moment, I can cry when someone is struggling to keep his head high, I can learn some specific life lesson, and when the movie is over, I can still think about it.

So when I watched the first edition of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, I liked Anne Hathaway so much that I ended up watching her other movies too.

Meryl Streep is a legend in her own right, and so is Stanley Tucci.

Plot

In today’s AI era, sequel films have become a trend.

Sequels are made only when the original films are either superhits or have established themselves as cult films.

Many cult movies from the past continue to resonate with audiences today. However, not every film is suited for a sequel, as reworking the original plot can be a delicate challenge.

So whenever a sequel to an iconic film is made, the filmmakers are more concerned with its future than the movie lovers who come to relive their experiences with iconic characters.

Imagine an era of ‘Pen-Paper’ journalism, and then reimagine the same task with advanced technology and AI invention; both worlds are poles apart in their method of execution.

Artificial Intelligence in Journalism

Development of characters after a gap of twenty years is quite a daunting task, isn’t it?

It often seems that older generations are hesitant to embrace new, advanced methods, sticking instead to traditional approaches. This resistance can hinder progress and limit the innovation potential.

Once they are over their inhibitions and fears, older generations are the real beast in the business.

Mirinda Pristley is representing that older generation, deep inside, vulnerable, and her outer appearance is seriously tough, tough nut to crack.

‘To change’ is tough for her, but safeguarding the weaker side of your personality is even tougher.

Maintaining a class while being vigilant about business, and at the same time, the urge to survive the ups and downs of the market, keeping pace with the young breed of technology-advanced people, Mirinda Pristley, character played by Meryl Streep, precisely captures the notion.

So, the brand-new Andy Sachs, aka Andrea Sachs, has already moved from conventional ‘pen-and-paper’ journalism to digital journalism with flying colors and has an established name in the field, winning awards and accolades.

In all industries, there is an employee like the character played by Stanley Tucci who is so integral to the company that no one can imagine the company without him/her.

Such a person never gets their due positional respect in the arena, yet there is never a shortage of contributions from their side.

In reference to Emily’s character, I would like to say that shortcuts to success often seem tempting and readily available, but true wisdom lies in choosing the long and steady path. Only by doing so can you achieve upright and solid success.

So, basically, the plot is to keep the ‘Runway’ magazine running smoothly in the fashion corridor, and to show how much the legends of the fashion industry had to sacrifice their normal lifestyles to keep it in vogue.

Journalism is such an effervescent pillar in our lives, without which nothing remarkable can witness the light of the day, no matter how much effort one puts into it.

  • ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5) — by my husband

A lesser rating from my husband?

As I clarified earlier, I like Hollywood movies and regional movies, and my hubby seldom watches them. Moreover, he didn’t watch the first edition of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, and I am still laughing that he still hasn’t watched the movie, even after so much persuasion.

He was just guessing the first version in his way, and I don’t want to spoil the fun of his imagination in a true Bollywood way.

The surprising element

Yes, it’s Lady Gaga. I was so thrilled to watch her on-screen.

Box Office Collection

The second version of the film ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway is making waves at the box office globally.

In the opening weekend, the movie had already minted as much as $233 million worldwide.

The success of this movie edition led to the revival of the original.

The film’s success sparked a revival of the original, as audiences found the new version relatable, and many were unaware of the original. Such success is a testament to the power of social media.

This clearly evoked memories of the original fashion films that depicted the real side of the fashion world.

The time when these films were released in the 2000s, when technology was just being invented, and the present day, when many of us are dependent on technology, are two very different times.

Conclusion

“All that glitters is not gold.”  We have this saying in our minds, and we often forget this, don’t we?

So, the real world of the fashion industry is unrealistically disheartening. Models are forced to strive to maintain a certain body figure; many of them face sexual atrocities as well.

The urge to remain in the rat race takes a toll on the mental health of designers, and media moguls who invest their money want assurance for their money.

What’s worse is the fast-growing fashion world, where any laxity will cost you a bomb, and every single person is replaceable with a new breed.

The film subtly reminds us of the harsh realities behind the glamorous fashion industry:

  • Constant pressure to maintain unrealistic standards
  • Mental health struggles
  • Fierce competition and replaceability
  • The hidden cost of success

Call To Action

Some movies are so OG that we can’t imagine their second version.

Some movies are so iconic that their sequels fail to entertain audiences as much as the original ones.

Certain movies have a lasting impact so profound that we find ourselves referencing iconic scenes in our everyday lives.

Some actors become legends after delivering impeccable performances, leaving the audience unable to envision anyone else in those roles.

I am so blessed to have a nice daughter who motivated me to watch worthwhile movies instead of following my husband’s taste in this visual art.

And on a personal note—I feel fortunate that my daughter nudged me toward meaningful cinema, helping me discover a whole new world beyond my comfort zone.

You have to embrace getting older. Life is precious, and when you’ve lost a lot of people, you realize each day is a gift.

Introduction

In my childhood, I was not much of a movie buff. Instead, I immersed myself in books and magazines—especially film magazines. Gossip columns and snippets from actors’ lives fascinated me, even though we didn’t even have a television at home.

Life had its own plans. I was blessed with a movie-loving husband and an equally enthusiastic daughter. While my husband introduced me to a wide variety of films, my daughter opened the doors to Hollywood cinema.

“The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) became one of the first Hollywood films that truly connected with me.

For Meryl Streep & Anne Hathaway Only

I prefer films that feel real—stories that make me think, feel, and reflect long after they end. That’s exactly what drew me to this film.

Anne Hathaway’s performance made a lasting impression, while Meryl Streep, as always, delivered a masterclass. Stanley Tucci added depth with his subtle yet powerful presence.

Plot

In today’s AI-driven world, sequels have become a trend—especially for films that have achieved cult status. However, not every film is suited for a sequel, and recreating magic after two decades is a challenging task.

The film beautifully contrasts traditional “pen-and-paper” journalism with modern digital media. Miranda Priestly represents the old guard—resistant yet powerful, tough yet vulnerable.

Andrea Sachs has evolved into a successful digital journalist, adapting seamlessly to modern technology. Meanwhile, characters like Nigel highlight the unsung heroes of any organization, and Emily reflects the dilemma of shortcuts versus steady success.

At its core, the story revolves around keeping Runway Magazine relevant in a rapidly evolving fashion world.

His lower rating comes from not having watched the original film yet—his imagination is still running in full Bollywood mode!

The Surprising Element

Lady Gaga’s presence in the film adds a refreshing and unexpected charm, making her appearance one of the highlights.

Box Office Collection

The film has made a strong global impact, collecting approximately $233 million in its opening weekend. Its success has also revived interest in the original film, showcasing the power of social media and modern audiences.

Conclusion

“All that glitters is not gold.”

The film subtly exposes the harsh realities behind the glamorous fashion industry—pressure, competition, mental health struggles, and the cost of staying relevant.

It also highlights how drastically the world has changed—from early 2000s simplicity to today’s tech-driven complexity.

Final Thoughts

Some films are timeless. Some characters are irreplaceable. While sequels may not always surpass the original, they often reignite nostalgia and spark meaningful conversations.

On a personal note, I feel grateful to my daughter for introducing me to meaningful cinema and expanding my horizons.
